Covington church hosting Christmas meal for the less fortunate

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - The Madison Avenue Christian Church is hosting their annual?Santa's Workshop for children in need along with Christmas dinner in the Covington Community.

Following a Christmas community dinner, each child will have a chance to sit on Santa's lap and receive a gift and a backpack full of goodies. The church is collecting toys for all ages (infant-16) plus, wash cloths, candy, healthy snacks, tooth brushes, tooth paste, tissue packs, soap, shampoo/conditioner, combs/brushes, Chapstick, hats, gloves, pencils, crayons, notebooks, etc. Volunteers are also needed on the 19th to help serve dinner or to hand out gifts at Santa's workshop.

In addition to Santa?s Workshop and Christmas Dinner, The Angel Tree Program will help children in need at James E. Biggs Early Elementary Education Center.? Church members support individual students in need by adopting Angels and providing Christmas gifts for them.? Angel gifts are due at the church by December 9. MACC Youth Minister Kyle McDougall coordinates the Angel Program.

??This year as we gather around the Christmas tree as families, some of us may think about the poor and at MACC, there is an opportunity for people to pitch in and help through the programs at our church,? said Pastor Chinna Simon.?? ?Together, we are giving every family the opportunity to celebrate Christmas this year.?

Now in its seventh year, the homeless meal program at Madison Avenue Christian Church has served over 60,000 hot meals with the help of church members and community volunteers.? Several local neighborhood groups and churches have pitched in to help feed the poor and provide a nourishing hot meal twice a week, year round.?

The church also provides Samaritan car care services, nursing care, flu shots, and personal care items.? Church members are responsible for stocking the supplies.

The prevalence of 'fall out' shelters in pop culture, indeed in culture itself, has seen a recent spike.

Knoxy Knox's Inviting, Modern Home House Tour | Apartment Therapy

It's hard not to be jealous of Knoxy as soon as you walk into her impeccably decorated house, catch a glimpse of her adorable outfit and taste her waffles and homemade whipped cream. But the wonderful thing about Knoxy is that though you'd have every right to be dripping with envy around her, she's created such a warm and inviting home and is so nice and welcoming that you're left with no choice but to ask to move in/be her best friend.

And with her friendly personality and open-door policy for guests, there's a very good chance you'd get a "yes" on both counts. With a style that's a mix of vintage, Hollywood Regency, classic and modern, Knoxy's home is definitely beautiful and full of ideas to borrow, but it's the way she enjoys using her home and seeing others enjoy it that makes her decorating and entertaining style so inspiring. You get the impression that anyone who walks into her apartment is greeted with a mimosa and a smile.

Does the architecture of her place look a little familiar? Knoxy lives next to Christi Finley (and is in fact the manager of the six bungalows on the property), and we enjoyed seeing how two distinct personalities show through so strongly in similar-looking spaces. And, just as neighbors popped in to say hello for Christi's shoot, they also sauntered over to investigate the homemade whipped cream and mimosas at Knoxy's place. And before you have time to get jealous again of Knoxy, Christi and the rest of that property's perfect, sitcom-like, neighborly feel, a record's put on the player, Edie starts being ridiculously adorable and the waffles are moved outside for laughter on the porch.

My Style: Inviting modern, I suppose. I've always been a huge fan of the mid century modern style, but it's not always the most inviting or welcoming approach. It's very important to me that friends and family feel free to "make themselves at home," so I strive to create a comfortable, yet intentional environment.

Inspiration: My incredibly creative and talented friends. Namely, I have so much respect and appreciation for my friend Karen Morgan's design style, and my dear Phyllis O'Quinn, who has taught me so much about the art of aesthetic. I feel very lucky to have such inspired people in my life who continue to challenge and teach me.

Favorite Element: The fact that I live on the same property as some of my dearest friends. We are all very social people, so at any given time, on any given day, you can find us sitting out on the porch, listening to records, and spending time together ? and don't get me started on the parties we throw. We pretty much look for any excuse to have a fete. I personally feel that entertaining is a dying art that so many people don't participate in anymore. To me, there is nothing better than sitting around a dinner table, or laying out on blankets in the front yard for hours listening to records and chatting with friends over delicious beverages.

Biggest Challenge: The lack of storage space is rough!

What Friends Say: My friends always tell me that my place is their home-away-from-home. More than a few people have keys to my house, so it is not uncommon to come home to someone making dinner or taking a nap in the guest room. I LOVE entertaining, so having visitors is a great way to fill the house with joy, and make some precious memories.

Biggest Embarrassment: The walls are very thin. I have an open door policy for friends and family who need a place to crash, or are visiting for SXSW or even just a weekend. It's always wonderful to have loved ones in the other room, but you can certainly hear a pin drop!

Favorite DIY element: I love the "head of garlic" photo that I took and printed on canvas. I built the frame and stretched the canvas myself, which definitely gave me a new appreciation for the medium.

Biggest Indulgence: Over time, my record and book collections have definitely added up!

Best Advice: If you have champagne tastes on a modest income, find a way to get what you want either by making the object yourself, or bartering for it. When I first moved into my house, I wasn't necessarily able to afford some of the pieces of furniture that I desired, so I bartered my photography services to earn them.

NASA captures gorgeous backlit photo of Saturn

NASA's Cassini spacecraft has captured a gorgeous backlit image of Saturn and its rings, providing a holiday treat for scientists and the public alike.

Cassini took the photo ? actually a mosaic of 60 images ? on Oct. 17, while looking back toward the sun from a spot within Saturn's shadow. Such a view can reveal details about the planet's atmosphere and rings that aren't otherwise visible, researchers said.

The image also highlights the beauty of the ringed planet, which everyone can appreciate.

"This glorious image is our special gift to you, the people of the world, in this holiday season that brings the year 2012 to a close," Cassini imaging team lead Carolyn Porco, of the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo., said in a statement.?

"I fervently hope it serves as a reminder that we humans, though troubled and warlike, are also the dreamers, thinkers, and explorers inhabiting one achingly beautiful planet, yearning for the sublime, and capable of the magnificent," she added.

Two of Saturn's many moons are visible in the newly released photo as tiny white dots below and to the left of the planet's rings. Geyser-spewing Enceladus, which likely harbors an ocean of liquid water beneath its icy shell, is closer to the rings; Tethys sits farther below and to the left.

Cassini last took a similar backlit Saturn shot in September 2006, researchers said. Earth could be seen as a pale dot in that mosaic, which was called "In Saturn's Shadow." (Like the sun, our planet is obscured by Saturn in the new photo.)

The 60 images composing the new mosaic were taken in violet, visible and near infrared wavelengths, researchers said. The overall image was processed in false color.

The $3.2 billion Cassini mission is a collaboration involving NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. Cassini launched in 1997, arrived at Saturn in 2004 and delivered the Huygens lander to the surface of Saturn's huge moon Titan in January 2005.

Cassini should continue studying Saturn and its moons for years to come; its mission has been extended though at least 2017.

After being held captive for five days in Syria, NBC's Richard Engel and his team recount being ambushed, blindfolded and traumatized before being freed at a checkpoint.?

Updated at 8:15 a.m. ET: NBC News? Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel and members of his network production team were freed from captors in Syria after a firefight at a checkpoint on Monday, five days after they were taken prisoner, NBC News said early Tuesday.

?After being kidnapped and held for five days inside Syria by an unknown group, NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel and his production crew members have been freed unharmed. We are pleased to report they are safely out of the country,? the network said in a statement.

?It is good to be here,? Engel said during a live appearance on TODAY from Turkey. ?I?m very happy that we?re able to do this live shot this morning.?

Engel said that they were traveling with Syrian rebels when a group of about 15 gunmen ?jumped out of the trees and bushes? and captured them.

'Psychological torture'
He said the gunmen executed one of the rebels ?on the spot,? and later during their captivity they were subjected to mock executions while blindfolded and bound.

"We weren't physically beaten or tortured. It was a lot of psychological torture, threats of being killed," Engel said.

"They made us choose which one of us would be shot first and when we refused there were mock shootings.?They pretended to shoot Ghazi [Balkiz, an NBC producer] several times,? Engel said.

Balkiz said that they had ?worked with each other very well? we kept each other?s spirits up? during their ordeal.?Cameraman John Kooistra said he had ?made good with my maker? and had been ?prepared to die many times.?

Engel said their captors ?were talking openly about their loyalty to the government? of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

He said he had a ?very good idea? about who they were -- members of the ?shabiha? militia, loyal to Assad, trained by the Iran?s Revolutionary Guard and allied with Lebanon-based group Hezbollah.

Engel said their captors? plan was to use them to win the freedom of people held by the rebels.

?They captured us in order to carry out this exchange,? he said.

Engel, 39, and his team disappeared shortly after crossing into northwest Syria from Turkey on Thursday. The network had not been able to contact them until learning that they had been freed on Monday.

The network said there was no claim of responsibility, no contact with the captors and no request for ransom during the time the crew was missing.

After entering Syria, Engel and his team were abducted, tossed into the back of a truck before being transported to an unknown location believed to be near the small town of Ma?arrat Misrin. During their captivity, they were blindfolded and bound, but otherwise not physically harmed, the network said.

Early Monday evening local time, the prisoners were being moved to a new location in a vehicle when their captors ran into a checkpoint manned by members of the Ahrar al-Sham brigade, a Syrian rebel group. There was a confrontation and a firefight ensued.? Two of the captors were killed, while an unknown number of others escaped, the network said.

The NBC News crew was unharmed in the incident. They remained in Syria until Tuesday morning when they made their way to the border and re-entered Turkey, the network said. They were to be evaluated and debriefed, but had communicated that everyone was in good health.

NBC News said it ?expressed its gratitude to those who worked to gather information and secure the release of our colleagues.?

Engel is widely regarded as one of America?s leading foreign correspondents for his coverage of wars, revolutions and political transitions around the world over the last 15 years. Most recently, he was recognized for his outstanding reporting on the 2011 revolution in Egypt, the conflict in Libya and unrest throughout the Arab world.?

One of the only Western journalists to cover the entire war in Iraq , Engel was named chief foreign correspondent of NBC News in April 2008. He joined the network in May 2003.

The Syrian civil war began in March 2011, when demonstrators took to the streets to show support for the so-called Arab Spring uprisings sweeping across the Middle East and north Africa and to demand the resignation of Assad of the ruling Ba?ath Party. The following month, Assad deployed the Syrian army to quell the uprising, ordering troops to open fire on demonstrators. But despite the harsh crackdown, Assad?s troops and militias loyal to the government were unable to quell what soon became an armed uprising.

In the intervening months, the security situation in the country has continued to deteriorate amid increasingly fierce fighting between Syrian troops and a loose confederation of outgunned but increasingly emboldened rebel forces. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimated in November that more than 40,000 people had died in the fighting.

NASA administrator to be enshrined in NC's First Flight ceremony ...

KITTY HAWK, N.C. (AP) ? North Carolina?s annual celebration of flight will honor NASA Administrator Charles Bolden Jr.

The First Flight Society said Bolden will be inducted Monday into the Paul E. Garber First Flight Shrine as part of the 109th celebration of powered flight at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills.

Bolden was commander of the 1994 Discovery flight, an eight-day mission that was the first joint U.S.-Russian shuttle mission. The mission involved a Russian cosmonaut as a mission specialist. The Columbia, S.C., native was chosen by President Barack Obama to be NASA?s 12th administrator. He assumed the post in 2009.

This year?s celebration recognizes the 100th anniversary of Marine Corps Aviation. Bolden is being honored for his accomplishments and as a representative of Marine Corps Aviation.
