Bruce Lee obtained legendary status as a martial artist in part because of a 1965 fight in Oakland, Calif., against Chinese kung fu master Wong Jack Man. It was the last fight of Lee's career.
For nearly 50 years, there has been much speculation and heated debate about what occurred inside of that gym, as very few people witnessed it. But the upshot of the bout is that it helped to develop Lee's views on Jeet Kune Do, which is the forerunner of today's mixed martial arts.
On Tuesday, Deadline.com reported that a movie about the fight that will be called "Birth of the Dragon" will be produced by QED International and Groundswell Productions.
[Also: Courageous Liz Carmouche open about sexual orientation]
Groundswell CEO Michael London told Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday that the process of developing a screenplay has just begun.
It is not, however, designed to be a biography of Lee, who died in 1973, or the definitive account of the fight.
"We're actually not trying to re-tell the story of Bruce Lee," London said. "I think that's a natural impression people might get. The idea, actually, is to take that battle, which has been so mysterious and so powerful and so interesting to so many, and tell the lead-up to that story, which is Wong Jack Man's arrival in San Francisco.
"We've created a back story. There is a lot people that know about why Wong Jack Man came to San Francisco, but we're trying to create a dramatically satisfying story about why he's there. So we're taking license. That's why we say it's going to be inspired by that fight and isn't a literal telling of it."
London said the writers -- Christopher Wilkinson and Stephen Rivele -- have the belief that Jack Man was trying to help Lee to become the best version of himself and was trying to teach Lee lessons.
London said the fight sequences will be shown through the eyes of the people who were there. One of those was Lee's wife, Linda, who was eight months pregnant at the time with the couple's son, Brandon.
"There will be a slightly stylized quality to the actual fight sequences," London said. "That will allow different people who were there to come away with differing conclusions of what happened. ... The whole idea is that the 13 people who saw that fight came away with very differing ideas of what happened. The fight itself will be impressionistic."
[Also: UFC's Matt Riddle wants to push for change on pot ban]
Jack Man is reclusive and rarely does interviews and has rarely spoken of that fight. London said producers will approach him after finishing the screenplay. He said he hasn't reached out to Lee's family, either.
Lee's daughter, Shannon, who runs the Bruce Lee Foundation, said that the fight was significant in her father's life because of the impact it had upon him.
It's never too late to find redemption...
So if you haven?t been fired yet, here?s how to avoid it happening?
Phil Fersht (HfS Research): ?So, Lee, we talk about more of a fluid and evolving outsourcing relationship.? How can we get there? Why is such a large proportion of this industry stuck in the weeds, with so many companies persisting in doing things in such a short-sighted way over the last decade. Why aren?t we evolving these relationships?? What is holding us back?
Lee Coulter (Ascension Health): Phil,?I think there are two primary reasons:
One is the most common misconception about outsourcing or shared services is that you can declare success. You can say ?We?re done. I?m done outsourcing. I?m done doing shared services?. No, no you can?t! This notion of this is some finite initiative and there are some number of deliverables that you can check off on your old checklist and say ?Oh I am done, yay?.? That is a very common misconception by the leadership in many organizations.
The second one is that the work to continue to evolve the relationship, is really hard work. You know for anybody who has actually been through a significant outsourcing negotiation, it?s hard work.? You know, not just to get the MSA in place, statements of work, service level targets, KPI?s, units of cost, demand management processes, these are all hard things to do. They really are pretty hard. And when we have taken the time to describe the nature of our relationship in a contract and it takes you know 6, 9, 12 months to do it and then another 12 months to work the kinks out of that. Nobody really looks at re-characterizing that relationship as something that they really want to do.? But, in order for the client to get the best of what a provider has to offer, that?s what needs to happen. And to increase the value and contribution of those services for the business, that?s what has to happen. Continually moving up the value scale to the point where the provider is not only able to bring their expertise and technology to your relationship but has the incentive to do so. You?re in an FTE contract moving to a task based contract, it?s is a minor step. It is a big and important, but minor step.
However, moving into a process component, that is yet another step.? Moving up the value chain from purchasing effort to purchasing tasks to result in purchasing processes to finally purchasing the contribution of that service to the business. This incents the provider to bring their own best thinking their own best technology to your services. But it requires that you completely start from scratch with the description of what it is you are buying and how it is you are paying for it, because you have to go through this process every couple of years of looking at what you are purchasing and the way you are purchasing it and say to yourself, ?Is this really incenting the right behaviour from both parties??
Phil: ?Our data is showing that there is a good chunk of clients today, around a third, who probably have that attitude that outsourcing is done, it?s finished ? let?s just keep chugging along with that contract.? So, we kind of take the attitude of if that?s the way they approach it, there is not much you can do. But it?s the remaining 66% of clients who have varying degrees of caring about improving and innovating.? Would you agree with that, and do you feel that those clients who are in the bottom 33% should be just left to do it their way, or do you need there should be some overall change in the way the industry approaches outsourcing, in general?
Lee:?Well, interesting data ? It would be interesting to see the segmentation in the 66% and see how they separate out, in terms of what their appetite is for going up the value chain. But for the 33% that kind of describe it as ?done?, it?s going to be really hard for a service provider to bring a client from thinking their ?done? to convince them that there is more value to be added.
It sounds unfortunate, but I don?t know really what the service provider could do.? Having been in outsourcing relationships for the last 15 years, I am sure that these providers are regularly presenting things that they could do for the client and their are conversations about innovation and projects and stuff that they could do, and it would fall on deaf ears. But I would probably encourage providers to look at a way to segment their clients and their service delivery to kind of optimize differently for those clients, on ?that?s where they are and that?s where they are going to be?.? You are going to be wasting your time trying to do anything else. For the 66% well, I will just leave my answer at that.? I would be interested to hear more about how the 66% break down.
Phil: ?Of the 66% who still actually care about value beyond cost, it?s roughly an even split.? You?ve got half of them in the death throes of grappling with antiquated contracts that haven?t been updated in quite some time.? But they want to break out of that ? they are showing some desire to do that.? Then you?ve got the upper echelon 33%, whom we have called the ?strategic? camp, who are in more regular dialogue with their providers about defining business outcomes, about trying to align stakeholders more effectively and trying to approach things in a different way.? So, we really look at three different camps across the industry ? ?you got ?lights on? camp on the left and this ?efficiency camp? in the middle that could go either way, and on the right hand side we?ve got this kind of ?collaborative strategic camp? who are trying to break out and change:
Today?s outsourcing industry split into three camps
Lee: ?How does this compare, or is that kind of a snapshot of current state?
Phil: ?It?s the first time we have really broken it out this way. I think the way to look at this is to realize most enterprise BPO engagements have only really been around for ten years and I think companies are kind of feeling their way, since this the first real view of where companies attitudes and approaches are?emerging?in all of this.? Whereas ITO is obviously a lot more mature and we are in a very operational phase in that industry. But also, with ITO, is that you still have 65% of IT staff doing ERP development work that are still based onshore. I think it?s just still a market where it?s a lot of the low-hanging-fruit administrative work that?s still moving out there. I think ITO has really struggled to move up the value chain from the very early days. Is that something you would agree with, or do you think it is evolving?
Lee: ?Yes. I really would.? The complexities of delivering increased value in technology today and I am going to say the permissiveness or the size of the invitation that the client has to provide to the provider is pretty big. Because every time you talk about evolving your technology portfolio, the number of stakeholders and the level of complexity it takes to do that work ? it?s really significant.
If a client isn?t really tuned into that and willing to clear the way for the provider to do that work, and not blame them when there are bumps in the road, it?s really tough for a provider to move out of ?run and maintain?, and I make the distinction between ?run and maintain? and ?evolve and re-transform?.? So, the business of evolving and re-transforming ? that?s where there is change management, communication, training, engaging directly with the business there is all of these things most organizations are not really thrilled about offering to a provider.

I do not know much about defamation law in other countries, but in the US there would be no valid case. The statements are derogatory, but are opinions and not facts.
This, of course, assumes that the University would go to fight
In US they can (and often do, right or wrong!) choose to settle instead and institute new policies limiting what employees can blog on the next day.
Even in US, I am afraid this would not get tossed out of court automatically. Someone would have to stand and fight at a significant expense.

CHELYABINSK, Russia (Reuters) - Thousands of Russian emergency workers went out on Saturday to clear up the damage from a meteor that exploded over the Ural mountains, damaging buildings, shattering windows and showering people with broken glass.
Divers searched a lake near the city of Chelyabinsk, where a hole several feet wide had opened in the ice, but had so far failed to find any large fragments, officials said.
The scarcity of evidence on the ground fuelled scores of conspiracy theories over what caused the fireball and its huge shockwave on Friday in the area which plays host to many defense industry plants.
Nationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky told reporters in Moscow it could have been "war-mongers" in the United States. "It's not meteors falling. It's a new weapon being tested by the Americans," he said.
A priest from near the explosion site called it an act of God. Social media sites were flooded with speculation about what might have caused the explosion, if not a meteorite.
"Honestly, I would be more inclined to believe that this was some military thing," said Oksana Trufanova, a local human rights activist.
Asked about the speculation, an official at the local branch of Russia's Emergencies Ministry simply replied: "Rubbish".
Residents of Chelyabinsk, an industrial city 1,500 km (950 miles) east of Moscow, heard an explosion, saw a bright light and then felt a shockwave that blew out windows and damaged the wall and roof of a zinc plant.
A fireball traveling at a speed of 30 km (19 miles) per second according to Russian space agency Roscosmos, blazed across the horizon, leaving a long white trail visible as far as 200 km (125 miles) away.
NASA estimated the meteor was 55 feet across before entering Earth's atmosphere and weighed about 10,000 tons.
It exploded miles above Earth, releasing nearly 500 kilotons of energy - about 30 times the size of the nuclear bomb dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima in World War Two, NASA added.
"We would expect an event of this magnitude to occur once every 100 years on average," said Paul Chodas of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
"When you have a fireball of this size we would expect a large number of meteorites to reach the surface and in this case there were probably some large ones."
DIVERS SEARCH LAKE
Search teams said they had found small objects up to about 1 cm (half-an-inch) wide that might be fragments of a meteorite, but no larger pieces.
The Chelyabinsk regional governor said the strike caused about 1 billion roubles ($33 million) worth of damage.
Life in the city had largely returned to normal by Saturday although 50 people were still in hospital. Officials said more than 1,200 people were injured, mostly by flying glass.
Repair work had to be done quickly because of the freezing temperatures, which sank close to -20 degrees Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit) at night.
Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov inspected the damage after President Vladimir Putin sent him to the region.
His ministry is under pressure to clean up fast following criticism over the failure to issue warnings in time before fatal flooding in southern Russia last summer and over its handling of forest fires in 2010.
Putin will also want to avoid a repeat of the criticism that he faced over his slow reaction to incidents early in his first term as president, such as the sinking of the Kursk submarine in 2000 which killed all 118 people on board.

Electricity has been restored in most parts of the Syrian capital and power will gradually reach the south, a top Syrian government official said Sunday as fighting raged in at least three provinces between rebels and troops loyal to President Bashar Assad.
The Syrian capital's 2.5 million residents have grown used to frequent power cuts as the country's nearly 2-year-old conflict has damaged infrastructure and sapped government revenue. A fuel shortage makes it hard for residents to run backup generators.
The power outage plunged Damascus into darkness late Saturday and affected much of southern Syria, mainly the provinces of Daraa and Sweida along the Jordanian border.
Electricity Minister Imad Khamis told the state news agency, SANA, that technical teams were working around the clock to restore power in the south. He blamed the blackout on an unspecified fault in high-tension lines.
A similar blackout struck the same areas on Jan. 20. The government blamed that outage on a rebel attack, and power was restored to most areas the following day.
Also on Sunday, a Britain-based rights group reported that at least six rebel field fighters were killed in clashes with Assad's army in the suburbs of the capital, the northern province of Hama and the southern restive town of Daraa.
In Hama's suburbs, rebels with the Free Syrian Army took over a police checkpoint and destroyed an army tank, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The U.N. says nearly 70,000 people have been killed in Syria's conflict since the revolt began in March 2011.
In a related development, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay pressed for international action to help stem the bloodshed, but acknowledged that achieving that won't be easy. She alleged that Assad's regime had committed crimes against humanity and should be referred to the International Criminal Court.
"It's an intergovernmental decision on what kind of action ? intervention, peacekeeping, military intervention or a referral to the International Criminal Court," Pillay told British television Channel 4 in an interview broadcast Saturday night.
"We urge that action be taken immediately," she said. "If there is doubt and hesitation, it's because people are assessing the value of military intervention in places like Libya, Syria and Afghanistan ? that it could become a long, drawn-out war with no guarantees that civilians will not be harmed in that process."

LONDON (Reuters) - Pop singer Rihanna launched her first clothing line with British high-street retailer River Island on Saturday, adding A-list glitz to the British leg of the international fashion circuit.
The fashion credentials of the British high street have flourished in recent years as more household clothing brands inch onto the catwalks of major fashion centres.
Models strutted in a line through a tiered catwalk of five square compartments at Rihanna's show, pausing in each to showcase midriff-bearing mesh tops and yellow shift dresses.
Denim tops teamed with slouchy jeans and monochrome dresses with thigh-high slits mirrored the Barbados-born singer's dressed-down but raunchy style.
"I loved it - it's so Rihanna, it's got Rihanna's name all over it," Los Angeles model Tolula Adeyemi said in the crowd.
Rihanna, a chart-topping R&B star, has already made a foray into fashion, teaming up with Armani Jeans in 2011.
With Britain facing the prospect of a triple-dip recession, many retailers have been forced to grapple for consumers facing income squeezes. The start of 2013 has seen a number of retail casualties, such as the demise of music retailer HMV.
But fashion industry and marketing experts warn A-list credentials are not always a sure-fire strategy for long-term brand success, and the haute-couture setting of the launch could even alienate Rihanna's target mass-market high-street audience.
Mary Ellen Muckerman, head of strategy at international brand consultancy Wolff Olins, said it was not hard for celebrities to create buzz.
"The celebrity has a built-in network to get word out and raise the profile of the collaboration very quickly, but what collaborations do struggle with is probably sustainability - how can this not just be 15 minutes of fame," Muckerman said.
STAR SELLING POWER
The boyish designs are Rihanna's first with River Island, a clothing chain that traces its history on Britain's high streets back more than 60 years and is known for its youthful clientele.
The crowd-drawing clothing line between British retailer Topshop and supermodel Kate Moss in 2007 is widely credited with initiating the burst of celebrity lines onto Britain's high street, paving the way for Madonna and Kylie Minogue.
"Celebrity dressing drives a large part of the industry. If celebrities are wearing it, there is confidence that you and I will want to wear those clothes as well," said Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council.
British value chain New Look said it attributed sales of just under 3 million pounds ($4.66 million) to its Kelly Brook line in 2012. The retailer reported group sales from its 1,100 international stores at 710.5 million pounds ($1.10 billion) for the first half of 2012.
Clothing retailer N Brown said its line with former England cricketer Freddie Flintoff accounted for around 5 percent of sales for menswear brand Jacamo and had spurred a ripple effect.
"The wider halo effect is what I see as being the real benefit of using a celebrity," said Paul Kendrick, marketing director at N Brown.
HIGH STREET, HIGH FASHION
London Fashion Week, best known for cutting-edge design, is also hosting upmarket retailer Whistles, as chains increasingly share the runway schedule with up-and-coming designers such as Mary Katrantzou and Holly Fulton.
British Vogue Editor Alexandra Shulman said in the British press this week she viewed the high-street foray into fashion as positive, but warned there was a saturation point.
Wendy Hein, a lecturer in marketing at Birkbeck College, said there was a mismatch between London's high-fashion catwalks and the high-street label.
"River Island is very much a high-street retail brand and wouldn't have that much of a connection to high fashion and couture," Hein said. "I think considering this mix, there's a danger here in terms of how this is being presented to high-fashion audiences and markets."

Negative stereotypes about boys may hinder their achievement, while assuring them that girls and boys are equally academic may help them achieve. From a very young age, children think boys are academically inferior to girls, and they believe adults think so, too. Even at these very young ages, boys' performance on an academic task is affected by messages that suggest that girls will do better than they will.
Those are the conclusions of new research published in the journal Child Development and conducted at the University of Kent. The research sought to determine the causes of boys' underachievement at school.
"People's performance suffers when they think others may see them through the lens of negative expectations for specific racial, class, and other social stereotypessuch as those related to genderand so expect them to do poorly," explains Bonny L. Hartley, a PhD student at the University of Kent, who led the study. "This effect, known as stereotype threat, grants stereotypes a self-fulfilling power."
In three studies of primarily White schoolchildren in Britain, Hartley and her colleague investigated the role of gender stereotypes. They found that from a very young age, children think boys are academically inferior to girls, and they believe that adults think so, too.
The first study looked at children's stereotypes about boys' and girls' conduct, ability, and motivation. Researchers gave 238 children ages 4 to 10 a series of scenarios that showed a child with either good behavior or performance (such as "This child really wants to learn and do well at school") or poor behavior or performance (such as "This child doesn't do very well at school"), then asked the children to indicate to whom the story referred by pointing to a picture, in silhouette, of a boy or a girl. From an early agegirls from 4 and boys from 7children matched girls to positive stories and boys to negative ones. This suggests that the children thought girls behaved better, performed better, and understood their work more than boys, despite the fact that boys are members of a nonstigmatized, high-status gender group that is substantially advantaged in society. Follow-up questions showed that children thought adults shared these stereotypes.
Researchers then did two experiments to determine whether stereotype threat hindered boys' academic performance. In one, involving 162 children ages 7 and 8, telling children that boys did worse than girls at school caused boys' performance in a test of reading, writing, and math to decline (compared to a control group that got no such information). In the other experiment, involving 184 children ages 6 to 9, telling children that boys and girls were expected to do equally well caused boys' performance on a scholastic aptitude test to improve (compared to a control group). Girls' performance wasn't affected.
"In many countries, boys lag behind girls at school," according to Hartley. "These studies suggest that negative academic stereotypes about boys are acquired in children's earliest years of primary education and have self-fulfilling consequences. They also suggest that it is possible to improve boys' performance, and so close the gender gap, by conveying egalitarian messages and refraining from such practices as dividing classes by gender."

With the recent news an AFL club and other players may have allegedly provided players with potentially illegal performance-enhancing substances, there?s clearly a need for caution to be exercised when dealing with supplements.
Everyone likes the idea of a bit of extra help when you?re slaving away at the gym four or five times a week. But what should you know about taking supplements that aren?t available through reputable outlets?
Sports Medicine Australia, the peak organisation for professionals in sports medicine and science, urged those considering taking unknown supplements to think again.
The organisation?s spokesman and sports physician Dr Peter Larkins said with the prevalence of supplements at an all-time high, all those considering this path need to realise the dangers associated with dealing with products such as these before proceeding.
?There are a lot of people using supplements in the belief of enhancing their sporting performance,? Larkins said.
?Quite often they are unaware what the products may contain and are putting themselves at risk of ingesting banned substances such as anabolic substances and amphetamines.
?Sportspeople, whether at an elite or community level considering purchasing supplements of any kind should be aware that supplements should always be discussed in consultation with a suitable sports medicine practitioner or sports dietitian.
?This will ensure that what is purchased and used will not be detrimental to one?s health and not be a banned substance.?
CleanEdge is Sports Medicine Australia?s anti-doping and body image program for all participants of sport, physical activity, recreation and fitness in the community.
It can help you find real, effective and safe ways to enhance performance; the facts and consequences of doping; and the latest information on nutrition and supplements in the fitness industry.

It's not quite as traditional as baseball and apple pie, but you've got to start somewhere. Following last year's success, Google is once again hosting a Presidential Google+ chat days after the State of the Union address, on February 14th at 4:50PM Eastern. The Fireside Hangout will see President Obama answer the most voted-for questions from Americans live, with a seasoned panel joining him for the discussion. It's arguably one of our better chances at getting answers about policies that we wouldn't get from a formal speech -- as such, those who can put aside nostalgia for old-fashioned Fireside Chats will likely get their fill at the source link.

Late last week, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said he wanted to talk to his Big Ten counterparts about their recruiting prowess.
Today, the Big Ten essentially waves the white flag in regard to NCAA recruiting reform.
I talked to Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and recruiting coordinator Eric Johnson about these rules. Here?s a link to that post.
The Big Ten doesn?t want this to run into crazy Skype time for its coaches with 15-year-olds. Then again, Michigan has offered a 15-year-old.
If you?re the SEC, you?ve just chiseled??We have serious concerns? on the Big Ten?s headstone. You?re work is done here, Nick Saban.
Here are some other nuggets of info from those meetings, courtesy of ESPN.com?s Adam Rittenberg:
? The eight-game B1G football schedule is dead. The league discussed 9- and 10-game options only. A decision will come this spring (May, maybe?). This would go into effect in 2016 or ?17, not when Maryland and Rutgers enter in ?14.
? Division alignment talk centered on geography. The On Iowa podcast has talked about three schools who sit on the east-west line: Michigan State, Northwestern and Purdue. We think Michigan State moves west and Northwestern stays west.
? Coaches want more night games, and if they want them in November, they have the Big Ten?s blessing. So, expect that.
? No discussion on division names.
Here?s the Big Ten?s release:
Statement by Big Ten Football Coaches and Athletic Directors
Park Ridge, Ill. ? The Big Ten Football Coaches and Athletic Directors met today in Park Ridge for a regularly scheduled meeting and subsequently issued the following statement with regard to pending NCAA DI legislation impacting college football:
We reviewed the 26 Rules Working Group proposals acted upon by the NCAA Board of Directors in January, some of which will become effective as early as July 1, 2013.? While we applaud the work that has been done to date, we are very concerned that the timeline proposed for implementation of the proposals does not allow sufficient time for the Football Recruiting Subcommittee of the NCAA Leadership Council to thoughtfully consider the impact of the proposals.
We are specifically concerned with the following three proposals and ask that they be tabled along with Proposal 13-2:
Proposal 11-2: Athletics Personnel ? Limitations on the Number and Duties of Coaches ? Elimination of Recruiting Coordination Functions
Proposal 13-3: Recruiting ? Deregulation of Modes and Numerical Limitations on Communication
Proposal 13-5-A:? Recruiting ? Elimination of Printed Recruiting Materials and Video/Audio Legislation
We have serious concerns whether these proposals, as currently written, are in the best interest of high school student-athletes, their families and their coaches.? We are also concerned about the adverse effect they would have on college coaches, administrators and university resources.
We look forward to working with the NCAA toward improving the game, the recruiting process and the overall college football experience for all student-athletes.

Feb. 1, 2013 ? We've all heard examples of animal altruism: Dogs caring for orphaned kittens, chimps sharing food or dolphins nudging injured mates to the surface. Now, a study led by the University of Colorado Boulder suggests some plants are altruistic too.
The researchers looked at corn, in which each fertilized seed contained two "siblings" -- an embryo and a corresponding bit of tissue known as endosperm that feeds the embryo as the seed grows, said CU-Boulder Professor Pamela Diggle. They compared the growth and behavior of the embryos and endosperm in seeds sharing the same mother and father with the growth and behavior of embryos and endosperm that had genetically different parents.
"The results indicated embryos with the same mother and father as the endosperm in their seed weighed significantly more than embryos with the same mother but a different father," said Diggle, a faculty member in CU-Boulder's ecology and evolutionary biology department. "We found that endosperm that does not share the same father as the embryo does not hand over as much food -- it appears to be acting less cooperatively."
A paper on the subject was published during the week of Jan. 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Co-authors on the study included Chi-Chih Wu, a CU-Boulder doctoral student in the ecology and evolutionary biology department and Professor William "Ned" Friedman, a professor at Harvard University who helped conduct research on the project while a faculty member at CU-Boulder.
Diggle said it is fairly clear from previous research that plants can preferentially withhold nutrients from inferior offspring when resources are limited. "Our study is the first to specifically test the idea of cooperation among siblings in plants."
"One of the most fundamental laws of nature is that if you are going to be an altruist, give it up to your closest relatives," said Friedman. "Altruism only evolves if the benefactor is a close relative of the beneficiary. When the endosperm gives all of its food to the embryo and then dies, it doesn't get more altruistic than that."
In corn reproduction, male flowers at the top of the plants distribute pollen grains two at a time through individual tubes to tiny cobs on the stalks covered by strands known as silks in a process known as double fertilization. When the two pollen grains come in contact with an individual silk, they produce a seed containing an embryo and endosperm. Each embryo results in just a single kernel of corn, said Diggle.
The team took advantage of an extremely rare phenomenon in plants called "hetero-fertilization," in which two different fathers sire individual corn kernels, said Diggle, currently a visiting professor at Harvard. The manipulation of corn plant genes that has been going on for millennia -- resulting in the production of multicolored "Indian corn" cobs of various colors like red, purple, blue and yellow -- helped the researchers in assessing the parentage of the kernels, she said.
Wu, who cultivated the corn and harvested more than 100 ears over a three-year period, removed, mapped and weighed every individual kernel out of each cob from the harvests. While the majority of kernels had an endosperm and embryo of the same color -- an indication they shared the same mother and father -- some had different colors for each, such as a purple outer kernel with yellow embryo.
Wu was searching for such rare kernels -- far less than one in 100 -- that had two different fathers as a way to assess cooperation between the embryo and endosperm. "It was very challenging and time-consuming research," said Friedman. "It was like looking for a needle in a haystack, or in this case, a kernel in a silo."
Endosperm -- in the form of corn, rice, wheat and other crops -- is critical to humans, providing about 70 percent of calories we consume annually worldwide. "The tissue in the seeds of flowering plants is what feeds the world," said Friedman, who also directs the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard. "If flowering plants weren't here, humans wouldn't be here."

MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski reports that Ed Koch, the former three-term mayor of New York City, died of congestive heart failure, at the age of 88.
By Ian Johnston, Staff Writer, NBC News
Former New York Mayor Ed Koch died early Friday at age 88, his spokesman said.
The larger-than-life Democrat served three terms in the post until January 1990.
He had struggled with heart disease and other health problems in recent years.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement that the city had lost ?an irrepressible icon, our most charismatic cheerleader and champion.?
?He was a great mayor, a great man, and a great friend. In elected office and as a private citizen, he was our most tireless, fearless, and guileless civic crusader,? he said.
?Through his tough, determined leadership and responsible fiscal stewardship, Ed helped lift the city out of its darkest days and set it on course for an incredible comeback,? he said.
?We will miss him dearly, but his good works - and his wit and wisdom - will forever be a part of the city he loved so much. His spirit will live on not only here at City Hall, and not only on the bridge the bears his name, but all across the five boroughs,? he added.
Bloomberg said flags would fly at half-staff at all city government buildings in his memory.?
The Associated Press noted that the "combative, acid-tongued" politician became a symbol of New York:
Bald and bombastic, paunchy and pretentious, the city's 105th mayor was quick with a friendly quip and equally fast with a cutting remark for his political enemies.
"You punch me, I punch back," Koch once memorably observed. "I do not believe it's good for one's self-respect to be a punching bag."
The mayor dismissed his critics as "wackos," waged verbal war with developer Donald Trump ("piggy") and mayoral successor Rudolph Giuliani ("nasty man"), lambasted the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and once reduced the head of the City Council to tears.
"I'm not the type to get ulcers," he wrote in "Mayor," his autobiography. "I give them."
Reverend Al Sharpton, president of National Action Network and a host on MSNBC, said in a statement that he had been one of Koch?s ?most vociferous critics."
?We later united and worked together around the country in a national campaign for non-violent drug offenders to give them a second chance in life and we ended up getting to know and understand each other,? he said.
?Although we argued about everything from my marching in Bensonhurst, to Florida and Trayvon Martin, and although we disagreed on politics from his views on President Obama to other matters, I have found that he was never a phony or a hypocrite,? he said.
?He would not patronize or deceive you. He said what he meant. He meant what he said. He fought for what he believed. May he rest in peace,? he added.
Koch was hospitalized in September with anemia and in December with a respiratory infection, NBCNewYork.com reported.
He was admitted to hospital on Jan. 19, but was released Saturday after being treated for water in his lungs and legs.
He was then readmitted to NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia hospital on Monday.
Koch's spokesman George Arzt said the former mayor died around 2 a.m. ET Friday of congestive heart failure.
A funeral service will be held on Monday.

One misstep is all it takes to set you off in the wrong direction. ?Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.? (Proverbs 4:26-27 NIV) As this verse reminds us, Christians must be mindful of how their interactions with others pave the way for inappropriate relationships. There?s nothing wrong with having friends. But give some thought to the following suggestions to keep your friends from becoming competitors for your spouse.
?
There are a lot of reasons not to do this? your spouse probably does not appreciate you airing your marriage?s dirty laundry, it provides an opportunity for increased bashing of your spouse and your relationship, and it can send the signal that you are interested in replacing your spouse. Few things bring people together like hating something. A marriage problems-venting session creates ideal conditions for you to bond with someone you might have no business bonding with. (INSERT THE FENCES QUOTE ART NEAR THESE TWO SUGGESTIONS)
?
The best way to avoid an affair is to be wary of becoming too intimate with members of the opposite sex. Isn?t that how you ended up married? You got to talking with your spouse, formed an emotional bond, acknowledge physical attraction, and then got married. The majority of affairs follow the same path. Be wary of inserting yourself in the personal business of members of the opposite sex who are not your spouse. If you think they need help, bring your spouse.
Everyone complains about their marriage every now and again. That does not mean you do not love your spouse or want to stay married to them. But, it can seem like it at the time. When you let off steam about your marriage problems, make sure it is with someone who supports the relationship. Only vent with people who want to help you strengthen the weaknesses in your marriage, not exploit them to their own benefit.
?
This is much more general than the previous tips, but just as important. I am not saying shut yourself off from every member of the opposite sex. Rather, be cautious in your interactions. Being alone with your spouse so you could get to know one another and bond was how you ended up falling in love with one another. Be wary of allowing the same thing to happen between yourself and someone who is not your spouse.
?Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.? (1 Peter 5:8) Many situations can seem innocent, but as this verse tells us, they can be corrupted. Avoid being alone with, touching, or spending long periods of time with members of the opposite sex you are not married to. If you would not like your spouse being this friendly with someone else, maybe you shouldn?t be either.
?
?They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.? (Romans 2:15 NIV) As this passage tells us, God has imbued all humans with a conscience. If that small, noisy voice in your heart acts up when you interact with someone, get some advice about the situation. If the thought of telling someone else about this relationship feels like something you would rather not do, consider that an additional sign the relationship is probably inappropriate.
?
If you are concerned a friendship with someone other than your spouse poses a threat to your marriage, consider getting in touch with a professional Christian marriage counselor. They can help you assess the dynamics of the relationship and how you should proceed. A professional Christian counselor will use Biblical principles and therapeutic techniques to help you understand your motivations regarding the relationship and whether they are in line with God?s design for marriage.

For a budding entrepreneur, the Internet is an enticing marketplace. A global customer base and little to no overhead costs mean that the barriers to entry are low, and the potential returns high. But whether you earn enough to simply cover the tools of your trade or turn your business into a worldwide success depend on your ability to navigate the unique tactics of selling to an audience you'll likely never meet face to face.
Mollie Chen, who sells handcrafted jewelry in her Etsy store, Mu-Yin Jewelry, and on her own website, estimates that most full-time Etsy sellers earn less than $100,000 after expenses, but the potential is much higher for those who know what they're doing.
Whether you choose to sell on Etsy, eBay, Amazon or your own website, here are eight tips for being a successful Internet entrepreneur.
To create demand in the vast Internet marketplace, your product has to be unique, better quality than its competition or difficult for the average consumer to obtain.
Annie Howes began by creating jewelry and selling it on Etsy but expanded to become a one-stop shop for crafters. In addition to her Etsy shop and her own website, she also opened a store on Amazon called Annie Howes Craft Kits.
"You have to have something special beyond your craft," Chen says. "You have to do it well and do it differently. There are so many sellers of jewelry; you have to give shoppers a reason to buy yours."
Michael Tonello, author of "Bringing Home the Birkin," started by selling vintage Hermes accessories on eBay. That evolved into selling the classic Birkin bag. He says entrepreneurs need to convey their passion to consumers. "If you don't love your product, why do you expect someone else to?"
With so many options for selling products online, Internet entrepreneurs may have to experiment with a few different venues. A shopper on Amazon fits a different profile than one perusing Etsy.
"Going through a third-party site like Etsy is a great way to get started because you can start small with low overheads," says Derrick Sutton, author of "How to Sell Your Crafts Online." He and his wife began selling art and jewelry on Etsy and since have made it their full-time business.
The ease of selling on a site such as Etsy also gives you an opportunity to gauge your ability as an Internet entrepreneur without breaking the bank. "It's a fantastic way to test the market and see if this is something you're going to enjoy," Sutton says.
Howes sold on Etsy for six months before branching out to include Amazon. Etsy has a built-in marketplace, she says, with a target market of consumers who were already looking for jewelry. She chose to expand her business by adding a store on Amazon because it's such a well-known site. "Chances are, if you've bought on the Internet, then you know Amazon," she says.
Internet entrepreneurs agree that exceptional-quality photos are a non-negotiable line item in your expenses.
"It's such a crucial factor because it's the only way people have a chance to really see and understand what you're selling," says Sutton, "unlike a traditional shop where you can touch and examine items."
Chen includes several photos of her jewelry taken from different angles. She also shows the pieces on a live model (most often herself) to give shoppers a better idea of how they will look.
Well-written descriptions go hand in hand with good quality photos, Chen says. The more detailed, the better, but don't make them overly long. For her Etsy listings, Chen explains the material used to craft the jewelry right in the title of the item, such as "sterling silver wire-wrapped ring with freshwater pearls." By reading just that much, she says, "The customers already know if they want to look at it. It's easier for them."
Once shoppers click on the item, Chen provides more details, including how to measure ring size, details on placing an order and shipping times. "I imagine what I would want to know if I were shopping on the Internet," she says.
Internet entrepreneurs can never go overboard providing customers with a reason to return to their stores and to recommend products to friends. It goes without saying that prompt shipping, responding to consumer questions and complaints, and a clear return policy will be expected. But since sellers and consumers rarely communicate in person, you'll have to find ways to create a personal touch.
"I was very responsive to special requests and acted almost like a personal shopper for some of my clients," Tonello says. "I kept a notebook with notes about what items people were looking for." He also included a thank-you note with every order -- it's a small nicety that can make the customer feel special.
Howes says she tries to address the needs of crafters before they know what their needs are. That not only maintains her reputation as a one-stop shop, but "It gives me an edge on the market," she says.
Listening to customers is vital if, at times, painful, according to Sutton. "Being open to constructive criticism can help you learn how to solve easily made mistakes. Always read your feedback and make constant adjustments."
A common mistake for new Internet entrepreneurs is to undercharge for their creations or fail to build in enough profit margin if they are reselling.
"I undercharged when I first started," Chen says. She began selling her custom jewelry on eBay as a hobby while attending graduate school and was making $300 a month. "I was doing it for fun, and I was pretty happy because it was just a hobby," she says. When a friend told her about Etsy and she began marketing her product there, she sold $800 in the first month. Once she got serious about the business, she realized she had to raise prices. Since she was selling on Etsy and eBay at that point, she kept the prices the same on both sites and waited to see what would happen. "I sold nothing on eBay, so that's when I decided Etsy was my customer," she says.
Chen also found that selling by auction on eBay didn't provide a stable income and made it difficult to forecast sales. Her first product, the sterling silver wire-wrapped pearl ring, was initially priced at $5. Now she sells them for $20 each and avoids the eBay auctions.
Many Internet entrepreneurs fail to write a business plan. However, sometimes the venture starts as a hobby and grows into a full-fledged business before there's time to get one written. Others don't want to take the time and would rather wait for shoppers to come to them.
But whether you're dabbling in a hobby or going full speed into a business launch, a plan will guide you from the seeds of an idea to a successful enterprise. And just as the Internet marketplace evolves, it pays to revisit the plan once a year to make adjustments in growth projections, marketing, staffing needs, etc.
"It helps you stay focused, and if you're unsure of a decision, you can go back to the plan," Howes says.
Sutton says it took him and his wife about a year to consistently reach the daily sales goals they wrote in their plan, but when they finally reached them, they realized they had a sustainable business.
"I had sales goals for every month written out," Chen says. "But it's not common for Etsy sellers to do that. A lot of them start selling as a hobby, then it turns to a part-time business and finally full time."
Sometimes the best marketing strategies come from customers. Tonello, for example, learned about the difficult-to-obtain Birkin bags by developing an email relationship with a regular scarf-buying client. Once he discovered a way to target clients who had an insatiable desire for the bags, he zoned in on that market.
Sutton says social media can be a boon to marketing. Twitter and Facebook, for instance, are great ways to communicate with your potential audience, but be careful of overselling.
"One of the biggest mistakes I see with people who sell online is being too aggressive with selling on social media networks," he says. "Self-promotion is vital, but it has to be done in moderation." Don't view these sites as one-way conversations that only promote your products. People will tire of that approach quickly.
