Indeed, An Almost Entirely Bootstrapped Job ... - Business Insider

">Daniel Goodman / Business Insider

Paul Forster, co-founder of Indeed

This post has been updated following a conversation with Indeed's CEO and co-founder, Paul Forster.

Indeed, a job search giant and one of the New York City area's biggest startups, has been acquired by Japanese company, Recruit Co. Ltd.

The acquisition price wasn't announced but you can bet it was for close to, if not more than, $1 billion. A source close to the company tells us Indeed is worth between $750 million and $1 billion, and the profitable company had discussed going public.

When we asked Indeed's CEO and co-founder Paul Forster about the acquisition price, he stated: "It was a very attractive offer. It was a very exciting outcome for shareholders and employees and everyone involved in the business." He also noted that his company has been profitable since 2007 and it's the #1 source of hires in the United States.

Recruit's offer does seem like it was lucrative for all parties involved. In a recent New York Times SEC filing, the media company stated that its investment in Forster's company netted it $100 million.

Founded in 2004, Indeed has more than 550 employees. Indeed has 80 million monthly uniques and it works with more than 25,000 advertisers.? Half of its traffic is international. More than 1 million resumes are added to Indeed every month.?

When Business Insider visited the company in February it only had 360 people on its payroll and 60 million monthly uniques.

Its revenue is growing quickly too. We're told Indeed will generate about $150 million this year and will net about $25 million with revenues growing 30% per year.

Recruit, its acquirer, has 22,000 employees and $10 billion in annual revenue. Forster says the two companies began discussions about six months ago, in early March.

What's most amazing about the acquisition is that Indeed's entire billion-dollar operation was almost entirely bootstrapped. Co-founders Paul Forster and Rony Kahan only took $5 million from Union Square Ventures, Allen & Co and The New York Times Company, and even then they didn't really need the outside capital.

"They had bootstrapped the company, launched the service, and were well on their way. They didn't need our money. But eventually we convinced them to take it," USV's Fred Wilson writes.

"We've been very capital efficient," Forster tells Business Insider. "Part of our ethos has been to be very, very efficient and hire the right people at the right time. We've also been laser focused on building the most relevant job search company. Monetizing that has been very successful." Indeed was the first auction-based, pay-per-click recruitment advertising service.

Indeed is not the first successful company Forster and Kahan founded together. In the early 2000's the former finance professionals founded jobsinthemoney. Their company was acquired in 2003 by Financial News.

So what happened to Indeed's IPO plans?

"We had the alternative option to go public and we were advised by Morgan Stanley in the deal," says Forster. "All the indications were that we would have had a successful IPO if we had chosen to go that route. But this was a very compelling offer."

What makes a "good" home cleaner label? | Queen of Green | David ...

Photo: What makes a

Choose cleaning products that have a full ingredient list.

Fact: You have no idea what chemicals are in your home cleaners.

How do I know? Over 10,500 of you took our home cleaners survey. You entered information on labels for over 15,000 products!

But only 42 per cent of those cleaning products displayed a full list of ingredients. And many of those lists were confusing.

It's not your fault.

Currently, there are no requirements in Canada for manufacturers to disclose all ingredients or warn consumers about chronic health and environmental hazards associated with their products. Yet, 82 per cent of you said ingredients and environmental or health concerns, including fragrance sensitivities, were the most important factors when choosing cleaning products.

So how do you know which dish soap, laundry soap or toilet cleaner is the safest for your family and the fishes?

In a non-toxic world, I believe a home cleaner label should include:

  1. A third-party certified eco-label, e.g. EcoLogo, Leaping Bunny, Green Seal and/or EcoCert
  2. Official biodegradability designation, e.g., biodegradable test OECD 301 D or E
  3. A complete and specific ingredient list with full disclosure of chemical names, including what's in "parfum" or "fragrance"
  4. Company contact information

Subscribe to the Queen of Green digest

I was relieved that 61 per cent of you said your dish soap had an ingredient list because this is the one home cleaner I've been unable to concoct successfully. (Aside from a handful of soap nuts thrown in a pickle jar and topped up with water, which works surprisingly well!)

In addition to the above criteria, the eco-friendliest store-bought dish soap will also come in a refillable, recyclable container (or, better yet, a recyclable container made from recycled contents) and be more viscous, because too watery means you'll waste more.

See our full list of recommendations to protect your health and the environment from unnecessary exposure to toxic chemicals in household cleaners. And, see how your home cleaners rank with EWG's Guide to Healthy Cleaning.

Have you found an eco-friendly dish soap that meets these requirements?

Sincerely,

Lindsay Coulter, Queen of Green

Without Steve Jobs, Apple Is Without A Map

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article. (More...)

Steve Jobs was famous for his temper, especially when faced with what he considered sub-par work. He was also known for his attention to detail. He'd do the unthinkable to get everything right, once famously requiring -- just days from the official launch -- that the original iPhone switch from a plastic display to the glass it ultimately was launched with.

Steve Jobs might thus have been the ultimate quality control that large bureaucracies usually fail to enforce. His near-psychotic drive for quality found itself reflected in Apple's (AAPL) products, rendering them as close to perfection as you're ever going to get in consumer electronics.

But Steve Jobs is gone, and with him his paranoid drive towards perfection might also have vanished from Apple. Ever since Steve Jobs died, this has been a lingering fear, yet it seemed the jewel-like appearance of the new iPhone 5 was proof that such fears could have been overdone. They weren't.

I have already talked about how Apple's attempt at a Mapping solution, made to drive Google's (GOOG) solution away from iOS, was inferior to Google Maps as well as Nokia's (NOK). However, this was just a detail, one feature where Apple didn't measure up, I thought. Reality, though, surprised even me. Apple basically shipped a feature filled with bugs and utterly lacking quality.

Indeed, Apple Maps is so filled with monstrous bugs, lack of quality and lack of detail that it represents a giant step backwards from where iOS 5 stood. And it's this incredible lack of quality which I believe wouldn't have made it past Steve Jobs. Yet, in today's Apple, it reached the market.

The Problems

Apple's Maps have a large number of problems in several areas, the main being:

  • A huge lack of detail when compared with what Apple shipped with iOS 5 (using Google Maps). This is made even worse when abroad, where the lack of detail borders on the absurd and would sometimes compete mostly with GPS software from 10 or 15 years ago.
  • A half-baked 3D approach which produces ugly artifacts (such as roads and bridges that appear to be buckling) time and time again.
  • Routing which seems inclined to drive customers off a cliff or in roundabout ways towards their destination - that is, if it points to the destination at all.
  • Badly curated satellite images, especially abroad, where one can easily find entire zones whose ground is clouded.

In a way, the defects are too many to mention. For those wanting to check on how bad the situation is, I recommend this Tumblr page: "The Amazing iOS6 Maps," which has hundreds of examples of the inaccuracies of Apple's Maps app, including one where the North American continent is labeled "Australia."

The point is, the product is quite obviously flawed. It's so flawed that one can't believe Steve Jobs wouldn't have killed it before it reached stores.

The implications

For now this is just a harbinger of possible change. I believe the iPhone 5 will be a huge commercial success nonetheless. But as it stands, a red flag was waved. A feature decidedly lacking in quality was let through because of corporate considerations, which clearly overrode the customer's interest. This is not a good sign. The kind of market position Apple attained will not be easy to defend if such fodder is given to Apple's competitors.

Conclusion

Apple's position at the top of the world in terms of margins and market capitalization is predicated on the continued success of the iPhone. In a hugely competitive market where many leaders of the past have stumbled, any letting down of the guard can bring with it sudden misery. While the iPhone 5 shouldn't be the product that ends Apple's run, for the first time, Apple seems to have blundered heavily with a feature it had no need to change other than for corporate reasons.

It's not the first time Apple commits a mistake (Antennagate comes to mind), but for now it's unlikely that the Maps situation can have a quick solution, due to the nature of the problem. It's a huge quest to provide half-decent mapping data.

This is perhaps a first sign that the post-Jobs Apple is somewhat of a different animal.

Ryan: President Obama will let Medicare go belly up.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- President Obama will let Medicare go belly up.

That is the warning GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan delivered to Florida's seniors Saturday -- a voting bloc that could determine not only the outcome of the Sunshine State but also the election.

"Mitt Romney and I have looked at the issue, worked with Democrats, come up with the best ideas from both parties for a plan to save Medicare," Ryan said during a town hall meeting in Orlando. "President Obama hasn't done a thing. President Obama is obviously complicit with this program going bankrupt."

It's the latest accusation in a perpetual back-and-forth on the issue. For weeks the Romney-Ryan team has been arguing that Obama "robbed" Medicare of $716 billion to pay for ObamaCare.

The Obama campaign says that's false and counters by claiming the Republican ticket is proposing a "voucher" program that would force seniors to shell out $6,400 a year.

Ryan outright dismissed the allegation.

"You'll hear the word voucher thrown around. The president likes to say it a lot of ?end Medicare as we know it.' That was rated the lie of the year last year," Ryan told the Orlando crowd. "Voucher is go to your mailbox, here's a check, go buy something. Nobody's proposing that. What we're saying for younger Americans when they become Medicare eligible -- you have a list of guaranteed coverage options to choose from. You can't be denied. You can choose from a list of comprehensive plans including traditional Medicare."

Besides speaking in front of a ticking debt clock, Ryan also rolled out some new stagecraft here, using a PowerPoint presentation to drive home the message that the rising national debt is crushing America and President Obama has no plan to fix the problem.

"By the time my three kids are around my age the debt is going to be two-and-a-half times the size of our economy," Ryan said as he pointed to a slide. "The reason we just end this chart there is because the Congressional Budget Office tells us the economy effectively crashes at that point," he continued. "We have a president who has literally not only done nothing but he's made it worse."

With the national debt surpassing $16 trillion, it's now estimated the average American household is in the hole by more than $140,000. That's roughly a 50 percent increase since President Obama took office, but Democrats say Republicans are just as responsible for the ongoing spending binge in Washington.

With Florida being one of the biggest prizes in the upcoming election, Ryan used his visit to Orlando to open up another line of attack, blasting President Obama for "dismantling" America's space program.

"Today, if we want to send an astronaut to the space station we have to pay the Russian to take him there. China may someday be looking down on us from the moon. That's unacceptable," Ryan said. "Mitt Romney and I believe America must lead in space. Mitt Romney and I believe we need a mission for NASA, a mission for a space program, and we also believe that this is an integral part of our national security."

The Obama campaign says Ryan should get his facts straight.

"It's probably time for Romney to have a talk with Paul Ryan. Congressman Ryan repeatedly voted against NASA funding. And the Romney-Ryan budget's cuts -- if applied across the board -- would cut funding for space exploration programs by 19 percent," said Obama campaign spokesman Danny Kanner.

PFT: Jets surprisingly cut veteran LB Thomas

Chandler Jones, Kevin KolbAP

We mentioned earlier in the week this was a big weekend for the Jones family, as?Jon defends his UFC light heavyweight belt tonight, while Chandler and Arthur face off in tomorrow night?s Patriots-Ravens game.

But the struggles they?ve faced throughout life, and continue to, makes their story about more than an athletic coincidence.

?All of this hasn?t dawned on me yet,? Jon Jones told Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com about his family?s success. ?We?re all still at the very young stages of our careers. I have this thing where I?m really big against complacency, so I don?t want accept the attitude like, ?We did it!? because we haven?t done it yet. Things could go wrong. You?re on top of the world one year and the next you?re borrowing money.

?I think there?s much more to come, but I am really happy for my parents. They can look at this being a success story at this point.?

Arthur II and Camille Jones? boys have made names for themselves, after struggling through tragedies in their younger years, and fighting to make things easier for their parents.

Their oldest sister Carmen died of brain cancer at age 18, and all helped with her care during her struggle.

Now, they?re paying back their mother for the years she looked after them.

Camille Jones has lost almost all her sight because of complications of diabetes. She?s also on dialysis and awaits a kidney transplant.

Chandler?s paying for her medical insurance, while Jon?s hired a nurse and a chef to help their parents, who moved them out of a rough neighborhood to the small town of Endicott, N.Y. as children. ?I remember my dad telling our family we were going so we could have a better life,? Jon said.

Their parents will be in Toronto for Jon?s fight tonight, then head to Baltimore to see the other two. And for all they?ve been through, they try to keep things in perspective.

?Life hasn?t changed that much,? Arthur Jones II said. ?People at the church are very happy for me, but there?s no big brouhaha of, ?That?s Mr. Jones. He?s a famous dad.?

With Jon one of the top fighters in the world, and Chandler emerging as a contributor for the Patriots as a first-round pick, that could be changing, soon.

But as impressive is the way the family has banded together for each other.

(AP) ? In a now familiar ritual, Apple's Asian fans jammed the tech juggernaut's shops in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore to pick up the latest version of its iPhone.

Eager buyers formed long lines at Apple Inc. stores in Australia and Japan to be the first to get their hands on the latest version of the smartphone. In Hong Kong, buyers had to sign up online for the chance to pick up the device at a preset time. The first customers were greeted by staff cheering, clapping, chanting "iPhone 5! iPhone 5!" and high-fiving them as they were escorted through the front door.

The smartphone is also being launched in the U.S., U.K., Canada, France and Germany on Friday and will go on sale in 22 more countries a week later. The iPhone 5 is thinner, lighter, has a taller screen, faster processor, updated software and can work on faster "fourth generation" mobile networks.

Order numbers indicate the iPhone 5 has overcome initial lukewarm reviews. Apple received 2 million orders in the first 24 hours of announcing its release date, more than twice the number for the iPhone 4S in the same period when that phone launched a year ago.

Analysts have estimated Apple will ship as many as 10 million of the new iPhones by the end of September.

Some Australian fans went to extreme lengths to be the first to own the new phone, grabbing the first spots in line at Apple's flagship store in downtown Sydney on Tuesday ? three days ahead of the release.

Todd Foot, 24, nabbed the coveted first spot and spent an average of 18 hours a day sitting in a folding chair adorned with an Australian flag, and attempting to catch a few hours' sleep each night in a tent on the sidewalk outside the store.

Foot's dedication was largely a marketing stunt, however. He writes product reviews for a technology website which plans to give away the phone after Foot reviews it.

In Hong Kong, not everyone who lined up was an Apple enthusiast. University student Kevin Wong, waiting to buy a black 16 gigabyte model for 5,588 Hong Kong dollars ($720), said he was getting one "for the cash." He planned to immediately resell it to one of the numerous grey market retailers catering to visiting mainland Chinese buyers. China is one of Apple's biggest sources of revenue but a release date for the iPhone 5 has not yet been set.

Mainland Chinese, who like to shop in Hong Kong because there's no sales tax and because of the strength of the yuan, will probably buy it from the resellers "at a higher price ? a way higher price," said Wong, who hoped to make a profit of HK$1000 ($129).

Tokyo's glitzy downtown Ginza district had not just one long line but two ? one, in front of the Apple store and the other across the main intersection at Softbank, the first carrier in Japan to offer iPhones ? both packed with Japanese determined to be among the world's first to own an iPhone 5.

Hidetoshi Nakamura, a 25-year-old auto engineer, said he's an Apple fan because it's an innovator.

"I love Apple," he said, standing toward the end of a two-block-long line, patiently reading a book and listening to music on his iPod.

"It's only the iPhone for me."

LG Optimus 4X HD coming to WIND and Videotron in October

4X HD

The folks at Mobile Syrup have received confirmation that the LG Optimus 4X HD will be coming to Canadian carriers WIND and VIdeotron in October. The Optimus 4X HD is a pretty spectacular device, packing a 1.5GHz Tegra 3 SoC, NFC and an 8MP camera under a beautiful 4.7-inch IPS True HD display. It's one of the best we've seen from LG.

On the software side, the 4X HD runs Ice Cream Sandwich, with a promise of a Jelly Bean update "soon". We don't put much stock on promises of updates from OEMs or carriers, so take this with a grain of salt. Also, interesting news for those of us south of the 54° 40' line -- WIND and Videotron both use the same AWS bands as T-Mobile in the states. Whether or not this means LG is talking to T-Mobile remains to be seen, but we've seen this play out that way before.

There's no word on pricing or an exact date yet, we'll keep an eye out for any news.

Who are Mitt Romney's 47 percent? A breakdown

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Just which 47 percent of Americans was Mitt Romney talking about? It's hard to say. He lumped together three different ways of sorting people in what he's called less-than-elegant remarks.

Each of those three groups ? likely Obama voters, people who get federal benefits and people who don't pay federal income taxes ? contains just under half of all Americans, in the neighborhood of 47 percent at a given moment. There's some overlap, but the groups are quite distinct.

Confusingly, Romney spoke as if they're made up of the same batch of Americans.

A look at the three groups:

___

OBAMA VOTERS

What Romney said: "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what."

He's right on the nose, according to the latest Associated Press-GfK poll: Forty-seven percent of likely voters say they support Obama. And 46 percent say they support Romney, essentially a tie. This number fluctuates from poll to poll and week to week and could shift substantially before Election Day.

Who they are:

?Most are employed: Sixty-two percent of the Obama voters work, including the 10 percent working only part time. A fourth are retired. Five percent say they're temporarily unemployed.

?Most earn higher-than-average wages. Fifty-six percent have household incomes above the U.S. median of $50,000. Just 16 percent have incomes below $30,000, and about the same share (20 percent) have incomes of $100,000 or more.

?They're all ages but skew younger than Romney's voters: Twenty percent are senior citizens and 12 percent are under age 30.

?They're more educated than the overall population: Forty-three percent boast four-year college degrees or above; 21 percent topped out with a high school diploma.

___

PEOPLE WHO GET FEDERAL BENEFITS

What Romney said: "There are 47 percent ... who are dependent on government ... who believe they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it."

Whether they are dependent and believe they are entitled to anything is arguable, but Romney's statistic is about right ? 49 percent of the U.S. population receive some kind of federal benefit, including Social Security and Medicare, according to the most recent Census Bureau data. Looking only at people who receive benefits that are based on financial need, such as food stamps, the portion is smaller ? just over a third of the population. Many people get more than one type of benefit.

The biggest programs and their percentage of the U.S. population:

?Medicaid: 26 percent

?Social Security: 16 percent

?Food stamps: 16 percent

?Medicare: 15 percent

?Women, Infants and Children food program: 8 percent

___

THOSE WHO PAY NO FEDERAL INCOME TAX

What Romney said: "Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax."

Romney's about on target ? 46 percent of U.S. households paid no federal income tax last year, according to a study by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. Most do pay other federal taxes, including Medicare and Social Security withholding. And they're not all poor. Some middle-income and wealthy families escape income tax because of deductions, credits and investment tax preferences.

Why they don't pay:

?About half don't earn enough money for a household of their size to owe income tax. For example, a family of four earning less than $26,400 would owe no taxes using the standard exemptions and deductions.

?About 22 percent get tax breaks for senior citizens that offset their income.

?About 15 percent get tax breaks for the working poor or low-income parents.

?Almost 3 percent get tax breaks for college tuition or other education expenses.

Who they are:

?The vast majority have below-average earnings: Among all who don't owe, 9 out of 10 make $50,000 or less.

?But some of the wealthy escape taxes, including about 4,000 households earning more than $1 million a year.

iOS 6 now available, here's what you need to know

12 hrs.

As Apple promised it would be, iOS 6 is here.? We gave it ? and the 200 or so new features it brings ? a close look. Here's are the key things you need to know about the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system.

Can?your device handle iOS 6?

According to Apple, you should be able to run iOS 6 on an Phone 3GS, an?iPhone 4, an iPhone 4S, a?fourth-generation iPod Touch, an?iPad 2 or a?third-generation iPad.?Yes, this means that folks with older iPod Touch devices, the original iPhone, or the iPhone 3G are officially out of luck.

Now, that's the official word. But?it's worth noting that?? like some other updates?? this particular iOS version might leave some of the older supported device feeling a bit sluggish. Keep that in mind, especially if you're using an iPhone 3GS, which was already left feeling a bit slow after the jump to iOS 5.

What makes iOS 6 so much better than older versions of iOS?
There?are over 200 new features to be found in iOS 6, but?? as always?? some stand out. Here are the key changes to know.

Siri
Siri has gotten some significant improvements in iOS 6. She's learned a lot of new languages (Italian, Mandarin, Cantonese, and more) and become friends with a lot of new services (such as OpenTable, Yelp, Rotten Tomatoes, and others).

This means that you can now get way more information directly from the personal assistant instead of being told that she'll search the Web for you. Now Siri will provide you with sports scores, movie times, and detailed restaurant information. On top of that, she can even help you make restaurant reservations, tweet for you, and even launch apps.

While Siri still isn't perfect, these changes are rather great and make it more likely that you'll actually use Siri for certain task instead of just treating her as a joke generator.?

Although ... if you do use Siri to amuse yourself, you may be happy to know that she's picked up some more jokes since the last time we explored how she says the darndest things.

Passbook
A new app called Passbook can store many of the things which normally clutter up your pockets. Boarding passes, discount cards, movie tickets, gift certificates, and so on can be contained securely within Passbook.?

Since the app has location support, it will also pull up the relevant item when you are near the place in which you'd use it. This means that your Sephora loyalty card will be right on your screen as you reach for a new lipstick, your boarding pass will appear as you arrive at the airport, and your Starbucks card will pop up as soon as you smell the coffee beans.

Facebook
Like Twitter, Facebook is now deeply integrated into iOS. You can post directly to the social network using a "tap to post" button in the Notification Center, from the Photo Roll, and more. And to make your life easier ??in theory, anyway ??you can allow events and birthdays which are listed on Facebook to populate in the Calendar app.

Do Not Disturb
Words can barely convey how incredibly useful the "Do Not Disturb" mode found in iOS 6 is.?This little feature allows you to silence alerts and calls for a while in way?significantly?more clever than what's offered by the regular volume toggle.?

You can designate regular "quiet hours" during which Do Not Disturb mode will automatically kick in, you can choose to allow calls from people who are listed in your favorites or contacts to ring through, or you can tell your iPhone to ring if someone calls twice within three minutes.

Maps
Not everyone will like how the Maps app has changed in iOS 6.?Apple has ditched Google Maps and now uses its own mapping solution (which is powered by TomTom).?This means that the Maps app is a wee bit different. There's Yelp integration, traffic information based on crowd-sourced data, automatically re-adjusting routes, and turn-by-turn directions.?

Yes, you read that right. There are finally turn-by-turn directions directly in the Maps app. And they're rather solid. (If they manage to get someone as?? ahem?? lacking in navigational skills as yours truly somewhere, they'll get anyone where he or she needs to go.)

Oh! And?Apple also added something called "Flyover" to Maps. This feature makes the whole world look a bit like a Sim City game by showing 3-D models of geographical features and buildings.

There are naturally some downsides to the revamped Maps app, of course. Without Google's gigantic and well-established pile of data, the Maps app can occasionally fail to find certain points of interest, lacks detail at certain zoom levels, and lacks public transportation information. They're tolerable shortcomings, but the Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg went as far as calling them the?"biggest drawback" of the iPhone 5 (which ships with iOS 6) when he reviewed the device.

Privacy
The new "Privacy" menu in the iOS 6 settings will help you sleep far more soundly at night. It breaks down the various items to which an app might request access (Contacts, Photos, Location Services, etc) and allows you to toggle each app's access to the item on and off.

This is a great way to check whether you accidentally gave an app more information than you intended?? and to simply take back some control later down the line.

Reply With Message and Remind Me Later
Odds are that you'll occasionally find yourself in a situation which prevents you from answering a call which matters. It's inevitable. But with iOS 6 you at least have the option of quickly replying with a preset text message or setting a reminder to return the call at a later time.

You can do either of those things in about the same amount of time it would take you to swipe your finger across your iPhone's screen.

What do you need to do before upgrading your?device?to?iOS 6?
Before you try upgrading your device to iOS 6, you need to make sure you have the latest version of iTunes. After you've taken care of that, you should really consider backing up your device?? just in case something goes wrong.

All you need to do in order to back up an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch is connect it to your computer, open up iTunes, right-click the gadget in the "Devices" menu, and select the "Backup" option. The software will take care of the rest. Once the backup process is complete, feel free to tap the "Check for Updates" button to get the iOS 6 download started. iTunes will walk you through the rest of the upgrade process. (Alternatively, you can also just update your device "over the air" by opening up the Settings app, tapping on "General," and selecting "Software Update.")

TravelPro Travel News and Opinion: Geeking out over the 787 ...

The first Boeing 787 Dreamliner was delivered one week short of a year ago, on Sept. 26, 2011, to Japan?s All Nippon Airways (ANA). One month later, on Oct. 26, the pioneering aircraft made its first passenger flight, from Tokyo?s Narita airport (NRT) to Hong Kong (HKG).

In addition to being a frequent traveler I?m also a 3,400-hour pilot, so I have a very keen interest in this revolutionary airplane.

If you?ve followed the development of this aircraft, you likely know some of the high-level facts. If not, allow me to bring you up to speed.

Probably the biggest, and most pivotal, innovation in the Dreamliner is the use of carbon fiber composite material rather than aluminum. The composite makes up 50% of the primary structure including the fuselage and wings, thus making it stronger and lighter than comparable mid-sized commercial jets. Recently, one of Boeing?s salespeople gave me a promotional 787 pen with its pocket clip made of that very same carbon fiber material (pictured at right).

The strength of the carbon fiber makes several additional features possible.

Because it?s stronger, the fuselage can accommodate higher cabin pressure, meaning less fatigue for its passengers. Typically, airliners are pressurized to altitudes equivalent to 6,500 to 7,000 feet above sea level, or the altitude of Flagstaff, Ariz., or Lake Tahoe. Its stronger structure allows the 787 to be pressurized to the equivalent of 6,000 feet above sea level, or the altitude of Colorado Springs.

Studies showed that reducing the cabin altitude to 6,000? dramatically reduced the level of fatigue passengers experienced. Interestingly, lowering the altitude further provided almost no additional benefit, according to Boeing.

Because it?s stronger, the fuselage can also accommodate larger windows. Although passengers clearly preferred larger windows, they caused engineering challenges. The loads the airplane structure must carry are more easily handled when a fuselage has fewer, or smaller, cutouts for doors and windows. With its stronger fuselage, the 787 can manage the loads despite the larger cutouts.

With a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 500,000 pounds, the 787 falls into the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) classification of a ?heavy? jet (anything over 300,000 pounds MTOW), but it?s still considerably lighter than a 777-300ER, which has a MTOW of 774,600 pounds, a 747-8 freighter, with a MTOW of 975,000 pounds, or the massive Airbus A-380-800. With a MTOW of 1,254,000 pounds, the A-380 has its own designation of ?super.?

The aircraft?s comparatively lighter weight and use of engines that are among the most powerful manufactured today allow the Dreamliner to achieve Mach 0.85 (85% of the speed of sound), the same top speed as the 777.? Most other commercial jetliners top out at Mach 0.8. Despite that, the engines are fuel-efficient, and the plane uses 20% less fuel than any other airplane of its size, according to Boeing data.

As of this writing, neither Rolls-Royce nor GE, the two engine manufacturers for the 787, has offered me a sample turbine blade from either engine...

The speed of sound, by the way, varies depending almost entirely on the temperature of the air. The colder the air, the denser it is and the slower sound travels. To determine the speed of sound in knots, multiple the square root of the absolute temperature in degrees Kelvin (Celsius + 273? to obtain the absolute temperature), by 38.94. To obtain miles per hour, multiply by 45. But I digress.

I said I was geeking out; I will not apologize.

The Dreamliner?s interior is reportedly quieter than more conventional aircraft; the air is cleaner and less drying; and the cabin is pressurized to a lower altitude, all of which reduce fatigue. The aircraft uses LEDs and mood lighting in the cabin and, as if to add icing to the cake, its windows are 30% larger and provide passengers with a better view than any other commercial aircraft.

Its wingspan of 197? is just slightly smaller than the 199?11? wingspan of the 777, a wide body that can carry over 300 passengers in a three-class configuration. The Dreamliner can carry between 210 and 250 passengers.

But, just as the map is not the territory, words do not an aircraft make, nor can they adequately describe the experience of riding in one, as even one of Boeing?s P-R people acknowledged.

?There are no words we could put on paper to explain how special the airplane is,? Lori Gunter wrote to me in an e-mail. In fact, she said, passengers have found that ?[T]he new high level of comfort and convenience becomes the new norm about 20 minutes into the flight and it?s not until they fly on another airplane following their 787 flight that they realize how important all the new features are.?

Since the first delivery about a year ago, 20 more Dreamliners have been delivered, including another dozen to ANA and five to Japan Airlines. However, only a few of that already-small number are carrying passengers to and from the United States.

Japan Airlines put its first Dreamliner on its new Tokyo-Boston route on April 22.? ANA will introduce the Dreamliner on its Seattle-Tokyo route on Oct. 1, and will operate the 787 on the San Jose, Calif.-Tokyo (SJC-NRT) non-stop route that kicks off Jan. 11, 2013.

The other 787s are operating in the eastern hemisphere.

ANA?s other 787s currently operate out of Haneda airport (HND) and fly to Okayama; Hiroshima; Beijing, China; and Frankfurt, Germany. HND, located 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) south of Tokyo, handles almost all domestic flights to and from Tokyo, while NRT handles the majority of international flights.

Ethiopian Air is using its sole 787 on the route between Addis Ababa and Tel Aviv, Israel, while Air India is using its just-delivered Dreamliner for domestic service.

For all these reasons, plus (honestly) getting to do something before a whole lot of other people, it was with great pleasure that I accepted an offer to be part of ANA?s media tour to introduce the Dreamliner to passengers traveling between Seattle and Tokyo. The tour ? and my reports, however inadequate my words and photos may prove to be ? will take place next month.

I can?t wait!

NASA Probes Record Sounds Of Space

Twin spacecraft recently began orbiting the earth, and the probes have been sending back strangely beautiful recordings of the sounds of space. Scientists call it the chorus. The sounds come from the magnetosphere, an area where charged particles from the sun interact with the earth's magnetic field.

RENEE MONTAGNE, HOST:

Now, to something new from NASA. A few weeks ago, twin spacecrafts known as the Radiation Belt Storm Probes began orbiting the earth. And since then the probes have been sending back strangely beautiful recordings of the sounds of space. NPR's Jon Hamilton has more.

(SOUNDBITE OF WHISTLING)

JON HAMILTON, BYLINE: This is one of the sounds. Scientists have known about it for decades. They call it the chorus.

(SOUNDBITE OF WHISTLING)

HAMILTON: The chorus comes from the magnetosphere, an area where charged particles from the sun interact with the earth's magnetic field. Craig Kletzing from the University of Iowa says the interaction produces radio waves that just happen to be in the same frequency range as sounds we can hear.

CRAIG KLETZING: So you can do a direct translation from radio wave to sound wave and then you can listen.

HAMILTON: Kletzing says it appears that the chorus gets louder when the earth's radiation belts are growing stronger.

KLETZING: We've known about this phenomena for a long, long time. I think people first were observing this back maybe even on the ground in the '50s. But the understanding of exactly how it's generated still remains one of the key scientific questions for this mission.

HAMILTON: NASA also hopes to get a better understanding of what's known as space weather, which can disable satellites and knock out power grids. The mission, managed by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, is scheduled to run for the next two years.

Ambassador Rice: Benghazi attack began spontaneously

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice recaps the causes and effects of recent violence against Americans in the Middle East.

By NBC News staff and wire services

The attack that killed four Americans at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, apparently began as a spontaneous protest against an anti-Islam film before turning violent, Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Sunday.

Rice, appearing in NBC?s ?Meet the Press,? said she was citing preliminary information and that the FBI was investigating the Tuesday night attack that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, and three others.

A wave of protests and violence has swept across the Middle East and elsewhere in the Muslim world over an obscure, amateurish movie called "Innocence of Muslims" that depicts Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a pedophile. Anti-U.S. protests in 20 countries led the Pentagon to dispatch elite Marine antiterrorism teams to Libya and Yemen and to position two Navy warships off Libya's coast.

Meanwhile, the State Department ordered all nonessential U.S. government workers and their families out of Sudan and Tunisia. In Lebanon, protesters torched an American fast-food restaurant. Even as tensions appeared to?ease over the?weekend, al-Qaida's most active Mideast branch was calling for further attacks on U.S. embassies.

"There's no question, as we've seen in the past with things like 'The Satanic Verses,' with the cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad, there have been such things that have sparked outrage and anger and this has been the proximate cause of what we've seen," Rice said.

?What happened in Benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in Cairo, almost a copycat of the demonstrations against our facility in Cairo, prompted by the video,? Rice said.

Protesters in Cairo had breached the walls of the U.S. Embassy and tore down the American flag.

In Benghazi, Rice told ?Meet the Press? host David Gregory, ?Opportunistic extremist elements came to the consulate as this was unfolding, they came with heavy weapons, which unfortunately are readily available in post-revolutionary Libya, and it escalated into a much more violent episode.?

Related:

There was ?no actionable intelligence? that the attack in Benghazi was imminent, Rice said. The attack overwhelmed security in place at the consulate, she said.

Rice?s comments came a day after Libyan President Mohammed Magarief told NBC News that ?foreigners? were involved in the planning and execution of the attack.

He expanded on the assertion Sunday, saying on CBS? "Face the Nation" that about 50 people, not all Libyans, have been arrested in connection with the Benghazi attack, which he said was planned by al-Qaida-linked foreigners, some from Mali and Algeria.

Magarief said there was little doubt the assault was planned rather than a spontaneous reaction to the video, as came on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the U.S.

He said the security situation in Libya remained "difficult" for Americans, as well as for Libyans. The United States wants the FBI to investigate the consulate attack, but Magarief said it may be too soon to send in investigators.

"It may be better for them to stay away for a little while until we do what we have to do ourselves," he said.

Rice told "Meet the Press" that the U.S. is working with authorities in Libya, which has received $200 million in U.S. aid?since 2011,?to bring to justice those responsible for the attack.
